Helping female entrepreneurs at UNSW

Yesterday it was back to school for some of the team as we went to UNSW to help some aspiring female entrepreneurs.

Jess, on our Creative team also works with General Assembly (GA) teaching a Visual Design course. On behalf of GA she was invited to talk to a group of female students at UNSW who are part of ‘The New Wave’ initiative which aims to promote entrepreneurship amongst women.

First, Jess gave a presentation that took the students through the principles of design from typography and colour to outlining the function of UX. Following the presentation she and Jenni, Adrenalin's Marketing Manager, circulated the room of aspiring entrepreneurs providing advice and feedback on their ideas and logo designs.

The New Wave initiative is the brain child of Mary Liu. An entrepreneur herself, Mary has not only been through the journey of starting up her own business but she has also worked at UNSW for two years as a Program Manager. In her role as a mentor for students launching start-ups she noticed that just 2/10 start-ups are female led so, as part of the Division of Enterprise, she decided to create the ‘New Wave’ initiative. It is the flagship female entrepreneurship program on campus and is run in partnership with student society, Capital W, which is a female society based in the Business School.

The students taking part in the the New Wave program applied by submitting a 3 minute video of themselves.  They were required to talk about themselves and explain what they would do if they had $5 and two hours to make as much money as possible. Over 40 students applied to the course and 20 were successful. Working in small groups, the students are given $300 to get their idea up and running. The initiative is split into these three sections:

  • Speaker series – a series of 13 talks from speakers from; Google, Microsoft, The Iconic, Maccas, and various female entrepreneurs
  • Incubator program – this three week section of the program sees female entrepreneurs and industry experts sharing their knowledge on topics relevant to building a start-up. Jess ran a workshop on design and other speakers will run sessions on; cold-calling, market research, legal considerations, marketing and pitching
  • Gala night - The program will end with a gala night, that will see each group showcase what they’ve been working on and their journey. They will then pitch to a panel of three judges; Alan Jones from BlueChilli, a team member from Springboard and entrepreneur Briella Brown who has appeared on Shark Tank.

Adrenalin was humbled to be part of the program. Seeing the incredible passion and ideas the students came up with was awe-inspiring. We wish every team the best of luck at the gala dinner and with bringing their ideas to life!
