5 Digital Trends to Watch for in 2010

Marketing Magazine recently caught up with Adrenalin Media Director Bernie Johnson to talk about some of the trends in Digital Media for 2010.

    Geo targeting

Geo targeting is going to be the holy grail for marketers – location based marketing. It works by using GPS technology to deliver targeted content or ads to consumers, based on their physical location. Almost all 3G phones these days (iPhone, Blackberry, Nokia, Andriod) come with built-in GPS capability and the new iPad ships with similar capability. Geo targeting will be huge for the service and hospitality industries. Imagine you’re reading the Byron Times on your iPad, see an ad for a new chain of vegan cafes, click on the ad and it comes back telling you where the closest falafel burger is to your current location. Nice.

How important is engaging a user experience expert when developing a website?

User experience experts bring an objective perspective to the information architecture and design process and, as such, play an integral role in developing a website.

All too often in the online creative process, the vested interests of either the design or brand teams prevail and end up dictating the final look and feel of a website. This often means usability considerations are not given due attention – the result of which can be extremely detrimental to the success of a website project and, ultimately the ROI generated.

  • 5 simple steps to maximise ROI

Worried you're not doing the best you can in attracting traffic to your online store - or achieving sales?

    1. Make the primary call-to-action highly visible

The ideal layout on the landing page for your offer is that it contains a single call-to-action, which is big, bold and screams out to be clicked. Web 2.0 design calls for 'dumbing-down' website design to focus on core messaging with a clear call-to-action – the key objective on your landing pages is to deliver more for less. This means solid (bold) sections of real estate, greater use of white space, bigger text and fewer columns – these steps mean the different elements on the page will not be competing with the highly visible call-to-action.

  • Social media and your business

There’s no doubting that the rise in social networking through social media websites and forums in the last few years has been phenomenal, and for the most part, probably a little scary for some businesses.

    "Why should I be bothered?

You might be forgiven for asking why a lone blogger in Darwin with a couple of followers is important to your business. The reason is that the lone blogger is like many of your current customers – small, niche and tight-knitted communities of people who are airing their views online for all to see. There’s a huge shift occurring in the way people now consume information, how they wish to receive information and on top of this, they’re not afraid of saying what they think either.
